Sarath - A brief intro
Sarath Kumarasinghe is one of the foremost classical Esraj players in North America, with a keen eye on
improvisation. He started playing the Esraj when he was of 12 years while in studying in secondary school in
Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Under the guidance of Visharad H.de S Jayasekera, Sarath traveled to the Bhatkande College of Music, Lucknow,
India and nurtured his skills in classical vocal and instrumental music. Sarath has participated in numerous
recordings and performed on radio, television stage and in movies on classical and light music.
His first solo Esraj instrumental recording of six Sinhala and Hindi songs was telecasted by the Independent
Television Network of Sri Lanka (ITN) in the year 2000, which inspired the light music listeners and the musicians in
the country alike due to his soothing style of play and the uniqueness of the tone of this hitherto classical
instrument.
In June 2004, Sarath held his first Solo Esraj Instrumental Concert, Sonduru Sathsara (Immortal Melodies) in
Toronto. The sequel, Sonduru Sathsara 2 was held in Toronto in November 2006 with the launch of his second CD by
the same name.
Sarath spearheads Sathsara Ensemble, a semi-clasical musical troupe who perform in the Greater Toronto area
regularly and in other locations in Ontario province and the U.S.A.
Sarath is a renowened music tutor in Mississauga, Ontario where he teaches children and adults in instrumental
music, fundamentals of western music theory and classical singing through Sathsara School of Music and All
Music Inc.
Sarath is presently living in Toronto, Canada.
